Old wheel bearings suck

My old Mazda B2600i had a dragging in the front left wheel when turning that sounded very much like a wheel bearing going bad.

This truck is the style of wheel bearing that thankfully isn’t used much anymore. It’s multiple tapered be arings and races embedded in the hub that also has the brake rotor mounted on it.

It requires a fair amount of things taken apart, in a specific order and then with the tension set just right and put back together.

This process is all quite a pain to do, especially the replacing of races. Luckily the races in there are okayish so I’m not going to replace them, just the crunchy bearings.

I think this guy failed as when I went to take it apart the tension wasn’t set correctly and was a little loose. I do not have the tools required to set everything exact so it gets the old ‘adjust it until you barely start to feel a drag’ method.

On top of it I still can’t find decent quality nitrile gloves anywhere so this is all done gloveless which is a pain in the ass.

At any rate Happy Sunday Afternoon Oppo!

The problem with that car is that it has not lived its life in California.

A mixed blessing.

That is definitely the problem with it and why I’m selling it after I fix this. This is also way better than most that have lived 30 years  here.

I will then buy one that has lived it’s life in California.

Haha yes did the front brakes on my Jaguar about a year ago. It was a bit of an adventure as I’d never done that before. Quite messy too but it is nice  knowing there’s all fresh grease in the wheel bearings. Probably shoulda replaced them but eh.

These are the best gloves in the universe. Comfortable, ckeanable, protect your hands and keeps them clean. Well worth the price.

Messy, time-consuming job. And I never feel  comfortable trusting my own judgement on what counts as a “slight drag”... I’d much rather just have a numerical torque spec.

Yeah parts are cheap, even for this oddball truck it was $21 for the both bearings needed for one side.

Just finished it up and no grinding while driving so success!

I didn’t replace the brake rotor even though I had it because then my OCD would make me do this job on the passenger side too and I didn’t want to.

Hmmm those look interesting. How’s the dexterity in them? I love using medical grade nitrile gloves as they’re very resistant to tearing and keep me clean but also leave my hands operating like they don’t have a glove on.

I do use leather work gloves when I don’t need to touch things much but just operate tools.

This one was especially annoying with the method they use to tighten the hub. It’s not a large nut with a lock washer like I’m used to. It’s a ring with 4 holes in it, two threaded. Then above that a lock ring with 12 holes in it which you have to line up with the two threaded holes to run a couple screws into to lock it in place.

It was definitely a pain, but it’s done now and doesn’t make any noise when driving so fixed for now.

Yeah, but here those would all have rusted away decades ago so they lived a far longer life out there.

Living in a community carved into a forested hillside? Not I.

There was a scientist who lives in SF quoted in an article today saying she’s no longer confident that her own city won’t find itself in flames in the future (not this year, but as things get worse).

The are formed to fit your hand and exceptionally comfortable. Dexterity is outstanding, I can reach into my pocket, extract my swiss army knife and open it with it on. I end up wearing them all day when working. The other plus is you can soak the nitril working surface with motor oil and wipe them clean with a paper towel and they are as good as new.

I use them for fishing. I also use them as inner gloved in the winter time as they are nice and thin.

This is definitely part of the problem.

I was also shocked when I recently found out how little California does preventative fire maintenance like prescribed burns and thinning of forests. Hell we do a lot of both here in Missouri to manage our fire risk.

Counterpoint: You can change them in your driveway without removing the knuckle or using a 20-ton press.

Only if you don’t also have to replace the races. If you do then you also need a puller, press, torch and freezer.

I wonder how much of that Oregon does. But with nothing left to burn, is there any more forest management to carry out?
